Conversely, here we see Logic putting shaping his own identity as an artist. His last album, as good as it was, wore its influences a little too snugly on it’s sleeve. Logic’s sophomore release is an album interesting in concept but also successfully delivers as simply great rap music. There isn’t a instrumental on the album I’d say is sub par. I also love the bouncing keys on Fade Away and the haunted melody of Stainless. For example, I Am The Greatest features a grand sounding Grizzly Bear sample which works so well with the trap beat style percussion. While the style of beats are varied, there are consistently ethereal vocal samples on this album. Most of the production was handled by 6ix and Logic himself. The beats here are an improvement to Logic’s last album. Innermission is my personal favorite, and on it, Logic gives us a deeper peek into his mind and how experiences like being on the road or seeing a friend jailed for 14 years changed his perspective. As the premise of the album would suggest, Logic thinks his music will live long after him which is essentially the theme of Fade Away. From 90′s NY feel on Young Jesus, to the jazz of Innermission Logic sounds completely natural in everything he dives into.

It creates a cohesive album full of diverse styles. Logic has a fast, nimble flow that sounds effortless, and he addresses his critiques by displaying his versatility as a rapper. The actual tracks on the album are essentially Logic rapping about his life over the past year and previous years. However, Logic’s lyrics, as they should be, are metaphorically related to the exploration, basically paralleling the trip to Paradise. This theme is tied through skits or scenes. Story-within-a-story has been a time honored tradition in writing but especially in rap so if you’re into meta concepts this is right up your alley. Coincidentally, Thomas and Kai are Logic fans and decide to play his second album on the way there, and that’s when then the music begins. Since earth’s resources are nearly all gone and there are only about 5 million humans on earth, this group scours the galaxy looking for planet Paradise, humanity’s soon-to-be new home. It centers around William Kai (voiced by Steve Blum), Quentin Thomas and an advanced AI named Thalia (voiced by Anna Elyse Palchikoff). The Incredible True Story is a concept album that tells a story from the future. Less than a year later, we’re treated with his follow-up album, The Incredible True Story, an album both unique in concept and even better in quality than his previous work. Last year, he finally released his debut album, Under Pressure, an album I thought was nearly exceptional. Logic’s a talented MC who’s been consistently releasing more mature sounding music each year since. Logic is a rapper out of Baltimore, Maryland who I’ve been following since his 2011 mix-tape, Young Sinatra.
